I took lessons nearly 20 years ago. I was never any good at the abdominal rolls. I was better at the hip moves. Overall, I wasn't too terribly good...:-(

Nice! Good too see we are all keeping it alive (even if it did come from th Turks! LOL) I'm finding it very hard to find anyone around here who teaches Greek/Turkish style. Egyptian is so prevalent, but I'm not drawn to it. Anyway, my real fascination is with tribal fusion, and gothic fusion, but I'd love to add to what I know of Greek. I know some, but I'd hardly call myself an expert in the area. Did/do either of you play zills? I love them!!

Hi Katerina - I'm 100% Greek! I dance under my aunt's name, Calliope - which is much more exotic than my own! I've been dancing for eight years now - with a Cleveland troupe called Hareem Shar'eem.

Very cool, I'm 100% too. I'm just joining a troupe now -- tribal/gothic fusion. Do you like the troupe setting? How often do you perform? There are so many dancers out here that it's very competative to get solo gigs, unless you do private events, I think.

Sophia is totally Greek! But I know what you mean. I wish my name was more Grecian -- like Artemis, or Eurydice, or Anthiclea ... but I keep my name. My pet peeve is changing your name so you can pretend you're Egyptian or Moroccan or something. :) There's a dancer out here who's stage name is ... Katerina. Makes me nuts!

Actually, Sophia is my SCA name - my real name is Tina. Not very exotic at all. I love 'Sophia' because of its meaning - but it meant a lot to my Aunt Calliope for me to use her name for the dancing stuff. Now that she's passed away, I would never dream of changing my dance name.

I LOVE the classic Greek names, by the way. If I ever have a daughter she will definitely have one. I always meant to name my daughter Sophia - but then I went and defamed that name in the SCA. The moniker is forever tainted now. alas.

I love the troupe dynamic personally. I'm not much of a solo dancer - I do it when I have to but I much rather enjoy dancing with other people. We perform fairly often usually at least a couple times a month. More in the summer/less in the winter. I love the fusion stuff! Our latest piece is this fantastic Greek techno piece of music that my Aussie cousins supplied and the choreography and costumes are gothic/tribal.

Good luck with your new troupe! I never get out to New England, but if I do someday I would love to see you guys perform!!

OK, I want to know what all of you use or have used. I have to say, I often prefer Turkish instrumentation to some Greek songs because Greeks really know how to "cheese" things up. It feels very silly dancing to bouzouki type music, and the songs the put on CD labeled Bellydance music are simply NOT tsiftetelia. They might be zembekika, rembetica ... how the hell do you BD to that??

Having said that, Bourneli has some great pieces that are appropriate. I also got a great double disc recently of old tsiftetelia from the 50s and 60. When i go home I'll post the title. I really like it.

OK, please share your favs. I'm always looking for more.

And Sophie/Tina :), what is that Greek techno piece?

Well, like I said, we're really into fusion so we do all sorts of music. When we do straight tribal we tend to stick with groups like Turku or groups that sound just like Turku. When we do more of the fusion stuff it's really anything that catches our attention. Techno, rom, flamenco, arabic or Egyptian pop, we even dance to an a capella song about Easter Island. Very fun.

The Greek techno song I mentioned is actually a bit of a mystery to us. My cousin gave me a mix CD with no info - I've been able to identify a few of the songs using the Internet but this particular one is a complete mystery. We're performing it in about a month and offering a reward for the first person in the audience who can tell us the name and/or artist.

Here's the info I promised you. The CD is called The Greek Belly Dance. It's go SO many great oldies. It's put out by EMI. I highly recommend it. Not sure if it would be good for fusion, it's all Greek. The disk was put for an English audience as the notes and credits are all in English. There is a track by "G. Lydia," Na'ha ekato kardies. Or as the CD says, I wish I had a hundred hearts. Her voice is incredible. Anyone know anything about her? I'm not sure I've heard of her before.

My favorite current (and American) so-called Rembetika band is Annabouboula. But, in all honesty, they do a sort of fusion. When I imagine doing a tsifteteli, I imagine a song of theirs, "Then birazi, mana." They also do a remake of "O Americanos" that sounds quite tsifteteli - ish. I'm not familiar with G. Lydia, sorry. But, I'm waiting to see if anyone else can supply a record title for me to look up.

My favorite Greek song when I was a kid was called "Ola Remathia" - it was on a collection of songs my Papou gave to my dad. I think it was from the 70s. The artist was Vicki-something. I think her last name started with an 'L'. I have never been able to find it again. I actually have the artist's name somewhere and I googled it and put it in Amazon, but can't find anything like that song. It was sort of bluesy and sad (well, the title says it all, I guess). Does that ring any bells for anyone? I would love to find this song again.

Hmmm...this morning, I went to a favorite bookmarked link, "wfmu, transpacific sound paradise," the August 15, 2004 with guest dj Geroge Sempepos (formerly of Annabouboula), clicked it and proceeded to listen as "G. Lydia" sang "Fige, fige." I didn't get the connection (and I should've since I listen to this link a few times a month). "G. Lydia" is "Yiota Lydia." If you want to hear this show (it was done just previous to the Olympics in Athens last year), try this link: www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/12220

If that doesn't work (I copied and pasted the link from the browser window), try going to www.wfmu.org first and then to transpacific sound paradises's homepage to their archives.

I lknow Annabouboula well. I have both their CDs, and found another song on some Balkans beneffit album. That song was Ti Se Meli. It is a reggea-inspired version of the classic. That's what i love about them. They infuse old classic Rembetica with a modern twist. it keeps these songs alive for the younger people. Too bad they disbanded...

I wish I even knew what the "G" stood for. I don't know why they did that.

Heh, took me some searching to figure out what G you meant. I was referring to G. Lidia, who is really Yiota Lidia (the G comes from the Greek translation on the album)

So..., are you really one of the members??????

It's too funny! I've got "Greek Fire" in my bag right now, because I'm using it while teaching bellydance to my class. Ill be working on choreography to 'Prosfigaki' soon I love anything where a tsiftetelli rhythm breaks in (sooooo very Greek sounding), and this one is one of the best versions. Speaking of Tsiftetelli, my SO/drummer and I were up until 3 AM last night, arguing about the Tsiftelelli rhythm - I shit you not. Now that's hard-core passion about music and dance.

Another funny thing is that when I met my mate 5 yrs agao, (and Irishman), he was the only other living being I'd known up til then who had heard of the band and had both your CDs too.

What are you recording?? I bet it's a secret, huh..... :( Oh well. I'll wait. :)

actually....this is the first time i mentioned to anyone ( or any posting) except my husband (cause he has to watch our 4 yr old twins while i do this) that we're doing the 3rd cd. george chris and i are really happy about it too. we never stopped being friends though we weren't spending the same amount of time together. we had disbanded just when things were starting to cook- for various reasons- we had done WOMAD and montreux and opened for chris issak etc.
being together again is very fun.
i will tell you 1 thing - you little bdancing gal, you - a version of katse ston kanape mou is in the works. no matter how we annabouboulize them the old tsiftetelia are just the best.
there are some cool oldies and originals being worked on.
will keep you posted on our progress. let me know where you dance maybe i can see you perform sometime-
if hubby can watch the twins !! : )

Hot damn! I love that song! I'm so excited I can't tell you!!! When I first discovered Greek Fire (accidentally on ebay while randomly seaching Greek-type keywords), I then searched for what ever else I could find - it look some time, but I was patient (In the Baths, and then I got the Balkan CD just for Ti Se Meli). I made my father a mix CD of your stuff (he's an old school serious lover of Rembetica); he thought it was so great that you were keeping those old classics alive for the neolea, and he liked it too.

I sure will tell you when I dance in NY (no plans right now) - I do have a gig in July for a launching of a Greek Food manufacturer or importer or something like that, but it's in CT, alas. BUT, it's a very good excuse to dance to Prosfigaki - in my Greek-inspired costume I'm making just for the occasion! (I'm a sick girl!)

So when is this mysterious CD going to be released, pray tell?? Tomorrow?

It's, Siko Horepse Koukli Mou (you know, : na se do na se haro, tsiftetelli Tourkiko, ni nanai yavroum ni nanai ni,... etc...) Oops, I'll try and refrain from making personal requests - they're all poping into my head now!

i'm glad SOMEBODY"S dad likes it. mine hates it. first- he's a total purist, and second- i am a classical soprano in my "straight" life and he hates it when i sing stuff not lyrical.
ps CT. is near me- i live i putnam county............let me know! i love meeting other artists especially annabouboula fans and triple especially dancers (i f i could have had a contract with God i would have been a dancer........but all the yrs i trained ......i was mediocre.) i am just an actor/singer who "moves well" : )
                                a
pps the most flack i got from"purists" in interviews etc. was for the demotica not the rebetika. my response was always the same. demotica were written by the people to express their reality- it changed for the mountain people- it changed for the island people- now it changes for the urban people. case closed. (of course, i love demotica and though i wouldn't say i am an expert in that field..we know the genre and love it enough to 'bend it like beckham'.

Really?? I'm surprised. I would have figured that because demotica are so changeable and local they'd be more open to interpretation and artistic tweaking (technical term...). Strange. Well, so what. Keep doing what you do. It's so refreshing and cool!

Putnam county, NY? I'll look that up. I'm from Bklyn originally but never got around much out of the metro area - like a true Noo Yawka.

I'm wondering - several years ago, the month and year that the summer Olympics was held in Athens, George Sempepos was a guest dj on wfmu's Transpacific Sound Paradise and played a particular song. Actually, he played the song that I'm thinking of by three different artists, one of which was Annabouboula. I *think* the title was something like "Light my cigarette." This song isn't on "Baths of Constantinople." Is it on any other Annabouboula recordings?

also: a little known fact for anyone born before 1980.
in the early 90's we got videoplay on MTV (can you believe it???!!!)
the song "i'd rather set myself on fire" ( from 'GREEK FIRE' ) was a minor hit and there was more creativity in the MTV programming then there is now. they played the video from the song quite a few times. it featured a belly dancer .

Wow...I didn't have a TV for a large portion of the early '90s...Apparently, I missed out.

Around Christmas, 1990, I was in Minneapolis looking through a stack of "Greek" recordings in a record shop in MPLS which, at the time, was called "Tidal Wave." I found "At the Baths of Constantinople" in the recent releases rack. I bought it and listened to it that evening. I've been a fan ever since.

OK, Anna, I have to ask - what Greek music do YOU listen to? I'm looking for inspiration but too stuck in Rembetica to take a leap without a net. I'd love to try some contemporary/modern/pop music for dancing that isn't too totally synth, yet has a good drummy rhythm with a middle eastern flavor.

By the way, you should pop over to the Greek Music Tribe. :) tribes.tribe.net/greekmusic
