The process is a natural one, and different dialects of Greek have more and less Turkish and other words depending on who they came into contact with. Greeks living in English-speaking countries have naturally brought in lots of English words, sometimes in more- and less-recognizable forms. Greeklish varies in different cities in the US, I'd also be interested in hearing from Greeks in places like Australia, South Africa, Canada and England.

I'll give mine in "quiz" format - give the word, use it in a sentence.

Some of my favorites:
Το στέκι - steki
Τι να φάμε; Ε, δε πάμε στο Bonanza για κανα στέκι;

Τα μπιλοζέρια - bilozeria (Chicago)
Βάλε γερό παλτό παιδί μου! Έχουμε μπολιζέρια σήμερα!

Γόπα - ghopa (Boston)
(A friend's uncle used to order for this at McDonalds...)

Η μεδουβάνα - medhouvana (Boston)

Greek prime minister reshuffles cabinet
By Robert Stevens
14 January 2009

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/jan2009/gree-j14.shtml

On January 8, the Greek government of New Democrat Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis completed a cabinet reshuffle.

The past month has seen widespread protests, demonstration and riots by students in opposition to the police killing of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos, and the government's programme of economic and social austerity. At the same time, there has been a growing militant movement by workers in many sectors protesting wage freezes, privatisations, the rising cost of living, pension cuts and mass redundancies.

The Karamanlis government has a majority of just one in the 300-member parliament and the regime is deeply unpopular. It has been embroiled in a series of political, corruption and financial scandals since its election in 2004 and reelection in September 2007. These have included a controversial land swap deal with a Greek Orthodox ministry and the conviction of a senior government aide for attempting to harbour a criminal in a major drug-dealing case.

A poll published January 8 in the daily Kathimerini found that support for the government had sharply decreased since April. According to the poll 38.5 percent of respondents would vote for the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in the next general election, up 8 points since April. Karamanlis's New Democracy (ND) was placed second with 32.5 percent. They were followed by the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) at 12 percent, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) with 8 percent, and the People's Orthodox Alarm (LAOS) with 4 percent.

Less than half of the previous cabinet members (seven out of 16) have been retained. But those remaining include the ministers of foreign affairs, defence and the interior. The changes see the removal of Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis, who was associated with a series of spending cuts, unpopular budgets and privatisations implemented in an attempt to keep Greece's public debt within European Union-imposed limits. Alogoskoufis was replaced by his former deputy Yiannis Papathanassiou.

Papathanassiou is closely associated with the policies of Alogoskoufis and gave him a glowing tribute on assuming his post. He was the head of the Athens Chamber of Commerce from 1993 to 2000 and the vice-chairman at gas company DEPA in 1993.

Karamanlis said of the new government, "We have an uphill struggle ahead of us as 2009 is going to be a difficult year. The global economic storm is unprecedented in postwar years.

"We know that certain political forces, as well as some trade union leaders, have engaged in a game of demagogy and populism. But we will not toy with the country's future. We have chosen the difficult path of responsibility and we will succeed."

Addressing the mass student protests that began following the police killing of Grigoropoulos on December 6, Karamanlis warned ominously, "We will decisively deal with the phenomena of catastrophic violence."

Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos added "that the police force would be given the resources it needs to carry out its duties."

Summing up the content of the reshuffle, the Athens daily Ta Nea editorialised that "the faces changed in order to calm reactions, but there is not the slightest direction toward changing policies."

An economist at a large Greek bank said of the reshuffle, "We do not expect any significant change of fiscal policy given the bad state of Greek finances and very limited room for manoeuvre."

Costas Panagopoulos of the Alco polling agency said of the incoming economy and finance minister, "The new minister must deal with a very difficult situation—the crisis reaching Greece, public borrowing at high rates, a market fearing the worst, but also the displeasure and scepticism of a society that believes government economic policy favours the rich and not the middle class or the poor.

"It's a tough task but the man comes from the markets, and is capable. (The PM) chose a man who knows the markets and the ministry, signalling that he is not changing policies but persons."

Karamanlis also announced the establishment of a new Inter-ministerial Committee on Economic Policy. The committee is charged with coordinating the government's policy in the economy, finance and development sectors. The committee consists of Karamanlis himself, Economy and Finance Minister Papathanassiou, Development Minister Costis Hatzigakis, and Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister George Souflias. Also attending its first meeting was George Provopoulos, the governor of the central bank, the Bank of Greece.

The reshuffle occurred just days after the shooting of a policeman, who was part of a police unit of three officers outside the Culture Ministry, close to the Exarcheia district in Athens. The January 5 shooting of 21-year-old police officer Diamantis Mantzounis, who received several gunshot wounds, was used to demonise protesting students and the "radical left." Interior Minister Pavlopoulos said the attack targeted "democracy and the rule of law."

The police speculated that a group known as "Revolutionary Struggle" were the most likely to have carried out the shooting. They said that weapons used to shoot at the police unit were linked to two previous shooting attacks on police stations in 2007 and an incident on December 23 last year, when two gunmen hidden within the grounds of Athens University opened fire on a police bus. Immediately following the shooting, dozens of people were rounded up and arrested.

PASOK leader George Papandreou visited the police officer in hospital and condemned the shootings "as a democrat and as an ordinary citizen."

SYRIZA parliamentary leader Alekos Alavanos said that "the Left defends with its identity the innocent victims of violence and it also defends the younger generation and, in this sense, SYRIZA's solidarity for policeman Diamantis is absolute."

On Thursday, Alavanos called for the establishment of a parliamentary committee that will focus on what he called the "radical democratisation of the police."

Greece to enter into recession
According to numerous economic analysts, the Greek economy will officially enter a recession this year. This follows economic growth that has averaged about 4 percent a year for a decade. The UBS investment bank predicted in November that Greece's economy will officially be in recession in 2009, showing negative growth of 0.1 percent. The bank noted that a major factor in its forecast of a recession was the Greek economy's major dependence on foreign funds.

Dimitris Daskalopoulos, SEB industrial federation president, recently warned that the government's €28 billion plan to increase liquidity at Greek banks would not stave off a recession. He said, "The measures for supporting bank liquidity were necessary but incomplete.... Measures for support of the real economy and low-income citizens were delayed. As a result, the prospect of an economic recession is nearing."

"The global crisis accelerated the advent of the Greek crisis, bringing to the surface all structural problems that hinder Greece's growth," he added.

Last week the National Statistics Service announced that the value of Greek exports had fallen by 15.5 percent in November, compared with the same month in 2007. The value of export-deliveries totalled €1.353 billion in November, down from €1.6 billion in November 2007. The value of import-arrivals stood at €4.029 billion, down from €4.815 billion in 2007—a decline of 16.3 percent.

Greece currently has a public debt burden equal to more than 90 percent of its GDP. This figure is the second-highest in the Eurozone after Italy. It is estimated that this year the government will spend some €12 billion, about a sixth of its budget, on servicing that debt.

Virtually every social index points to a sharp polarisation in Greek society. Around a quarter of under-20-year-olds are unemployed and live below the poverty line. Unemployment in the 15-24 age group is 24.3 percent. For college graduates, the rate of unemployment is even higher, at 28 percent. Having studied for many years many youth are forced to take poorly paid work such as driving taxis, as bar staff or working at petrol stations.

The number of long-term unemployed made up 52.2 percent of the total jobless figure for the last quarter of 2008. On January 2, a Greek woman made the national news after threatening to kill herself by jumping from the ancient Acropolis monument in Athens, after she had been made redundant. She was formerly a contract worker at the Greek Ministry of Culture.

At least a third of Greeks live close to or under the poverty line. Statistics compiled by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) show that there are 832,456 poor households in the country, which adds up to 2,088,000 people out of a population of just over 11 million. According to lawyer Melina Mouzouraki, some 500,000 households pay more than half their income to cover their debt. The level of debt owed by hundreds of thousands of people places them close to net poverty, even though they are not officially considered to be poor.

Urgent call to Greek people: Block the shipment of US arms to Israel through Greek port!

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine calls upon the Greek movement, the Greek people and all international progressive forces to halt the planned shipment of U.S. arms to Israel from the Greek port of Astakos. International media reports have revealed that the U.S. Navy is attempting to ship 325 20-foot containers of ammunition, over 3000 tons, in an emergency shipment of arms to aid the occupation in its ongoing war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The PFLP is calling upon the people of the world, and particularly the Greek movement to act to stop this shipment of arms. The U.S. has been attempting to hire a merchant ship to transport the weaponry to the Israelis at Asdud port in mid- to late January. This weaponry must not be allowed to enter the hands of the Israelis, where it will be used to massacre our people in Gaza! It must be stopped by all means!

These bombs are going to be used in Israel's wars - against Palestinians, Lebanese, Arabs, Iranians, and the people of the region. This emergency shipment indicates that the occupier is demanding ever more weaponry in its futile war of massacres against the Palestinian people and the Palestinian resistance.

The demand of the Palestinian people, the Arab people, and all progressive forces - including the progressive forces in the U.S. - is the international isolation and the end of all U.S. aid to Israel. The U.S. government, however is Israel's strategic partner, and is committed to partnering with Israel in its massacres and crimes against our people. If they will not stop the arms shipment, the people of Greece and the people of the world must stop it for them!

The PFLP salutes the Greek people - your unconditional solidarity and your mass demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people have sent a strong and powerful message of support, combined with aid, volunteers, and action on the ground. Your own courageous struggles for justice have inspired us and people around the world.

We are calling upon:

1. All Greek companies and all shipping companies to refuse to carry any shipment of arms to Israel. Any shipping company who carries these weapons has the blood of the people of Gaza on its hands!

2. Greek workers and all port workers to refuse to load the cargo for any shipment of arms to Israel. The strong hands of Greek workers and Greek labor should not be sullied with this dangerous cargo!

3. The Greek government to prohibit the use of its port to ship arms to the occupation state massacring our people!

4. The Greek people, the Greek movement, and all international and progressive forces to take action to stop any such shipment from loading or leaving the port of Astakos!

The PFLP is calling for your continuing unconditional solidarity and support to prevent the U.S. and Israel from using the land and ports of the Greek people a supply base for occupation, massacres, and crimes.

The Greek people have a proud history and present of struggle. The relationship between the Arab people and the Greek people is strong and powerful and we call upon you today to march with us once again toward victory and justice for the Palestinian people and block this arms shipment!

http://www.macedonia.info/name.htm

The deliberate and systematic campaign of distortion, stealing and absorption of the history and ethnicity of the ancient Macedonians is ongoing today with full and untiring strength. Although officially this country is known as The FYROM, through a vigorous campaign they have managed to contrive the world to call it Macedonia in common day usage. The Internet and mass-communication has made it easy for them to do this and they have used these tools to create a flood of misinformation. One such example that clearly shows their devious actions is the Web site: http://faq.macedonia.org/. Hitler is credited with saying "Tell a big enough lie, tell it often enough, and it becomes the truth". In some way this provides an explanation as to why the inhabitants of The FYROM are so adamant about keeping the name Macedonia. Now, fifty-eight years after the start of the campaign of distortion, stealing and absorption of the GREEK history and ethnicity of the ancient Macedonians, we find that the inhabitants of The FYROM are mostly the children of 1944 and those that were born afterwards and who grew up with these untruths. To them these have become facts. But, must this go on any longer? Isn't it time to set the record straight?

What's in a Name? - In a name you have identity, history, ancestry, culture, ethnicity, belonging, cohesiveness, texture, color, and many other qualities. And, it is in the Macedonian names, which those in The FYROM now want to claim as their own, where one of the greatest proofs of the GREEKNESS of Macedonia lies. Here are some of countless examples:

Macedonian = GREEK for "the tall one"

Amyntas (father of Philip) = GREEK for "defender"

Philippos (Philip) = GREEK for "one who loves the horse"

Alexandros (Alexander) = GREEK for "the protector of man"

Bucephalus (Alexander's beloved horse with a large head)= GREEK for "ox-like head "

Aristotle (Alexander's teacher) = GREEK for "the best and perfect one"

Thessaloniki = GREEK for "victory over the Thessalians"

Countless historians and other scholars have written extensively about the Greekness of Macedonia. Henry Morgenthau served in Constantinople as US Ambassador (1913-16), served as Vice President of the Relief Committee for the Middle East (1919-21). He was appointed by the League of Nations and served as President of the Greek Refugee Settlement Committee (1923-28) and is known as a most reliable source of historical facts. In 1929 (please note that this was 15 years before the start of the campaign of distortion, stealing and absorption of the Greek history and ethnicity of the ancient Macedonians by Tito’s propagandists) Henry Morgenthau published his book “I was sent to Athens”, in which he writes:

"Soon after Athens had reached the height of its glory under Pericles in the Fifth Century, B. C., and had started on its decline, the rise of Macedon under Philip carried Greek influence into new regions. The glory of Athens had been based upon sea power, but the conquests of Macedon were the work of land armies— Philip invented the invincible phalanx. Upon Philip's death his son, Alexander the Great, set forth to conquer the whole of the then known world, and as that world in his day lay to the east, his marches were in that direction. In a few years he had overrun the fertile plains and opulent cities of Asia Minor, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia, and had carried his conquests to the gates of Delhi. In all the cities in the intervening countries he left large garrisons of Greek soldiers. In many of these countries he founded flourishing new cities. In every place his soldiers were followed by large colonies of Greek civilians. The result was that the whole of western Asia, and of what we call the Near East, including Asia Minor Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Babylonia, Mesopotamia, Persia, and northwestern India, was saturated with the Greek influence and with Greek colonies."

"The imagination of these conquered peoples was dazzled by the introduction of Greek art, literature, philosophy, and public works. Though the successors of Alexander were unable to maintain the political control of the lands he conquered, and though successive waves of Roman, Arabian, and Tartar conquests swept over these lands in succeeding centuries, none of the later conquerors has been able wholly to eradicate the influence of Greek culture, nor to exterminate that element of population which was of Greek blood."

"….The Greek War of Independence, which came to a successful conclusion in 1832, affected less than one half of the Greeks in the Turkish Empire. It did not bring freedom to the Greeks of Macedonia and Thrace, of Crete and the Aegean Islands, nor to the more than two million Greeks in Asia Minor and Constantinople."

So "apologia" means "defense", or a defensive monologue right? So what is the opposite of an "apologia"? What is the word for an "indictment"?

As some of you may know, Porsche, Jackie and myself bellydanced at Avalon (a club in Sacramento) on Friday the 27th. We planned to do this despite Avalon being on our list of places to NOT go. Apparently it had gained that distinction for good reason and this designation was only re-enforced that evening. We had been invited by a promoter and after a week of very long nights getting our costumes ready we got in the door quickly and easily. Unfortunately that was the only thing that went well for the rest of the evening.

While we were changing in the women’s restroom (they offered no dressing area or a place for us to put our bags) the girls in line were very rude and kept shaking the stall door even though they could see our costumes draped over the door. Porsche stuck her head out of the door several times and apologized for taking so long and explained that we were getting ready to perform. At this point I was bleeding from multiple self-inflicted stab wounds from trying to pin all our costumes on and just needed a drink. Upon, exiting the stall, several of the girls in line changed their tune in regard to us taking so long, others still had nothing but dirty looks to offer.

We proceeded to the smaller, side room where the Middle Eastern music was playing. There were two professional dancers performing atop platforms and we danced on the floor around them. Not two minutes in and I had a male patron grab my butt. I told him very sharply to not touch me. He asserted that he had only “brushed” me. I then repeated myself and told him not to “brush” me. When I refused to dance with another guy that was trying to grind on me he called me a “crazy Jew”. I’m not even sure what that was supposed to mean and while I’m not Jewish I was still irritated and offended. Chalking it up to stupidity I forgot about it until much later in the evening.

When the professional dancers adjourned their posts for the evening, Porsche and Jackie attempted to carefully (so as to not damage their costumes) climb onto one of the platforms only to have two other girls rush up onto it and start dancing. We were approached by several girls asking to borrow our veils for the competition which we turned down. I was sitting on a comfy padded bench that overlooked the entire room when a girl sat down on my thigh and all the beadwork on my costume. She was also standing on my skirt. When I got up she started playing with Jackie’s veil. Do they not teach basic rules, such as not touching other people’s belongings, in kindergarten anymore?

The promoter that invited us is a very nice guy and was excited to see us when we got there. He signed Jackie up for the “bellydance competition”. Competitors were called up to a platform one at a time to dance. After the M.C. started calling the same girls up a second time Jackie asked the DJ if they could call her name. He told her to talk to the “guy with the microphone”. Jackie then approached the M.C. and asked for her name to be called. The M.C. proceeds to tell her that she can’t compete because “she is white and can’t dance and the Indian girls are dancing”. We were all quite shocked by this statement and when it fully sunk in we were pretty upset as well. Not only did the “Indian” girls ask to borrow our veils but now we weren’t even allowed to compete. None of us really cared about the “competition” at any rate but it was a chance to dance and have fun. I found it interesting that the two professional dancers both (gorgeous, talented women) appeared to be of European descent. It was clearly less a “bellydance competition” and more a popularity contest.

I was also completely annoyed by the fact that the M.C. kept telling the competitors to “shake their ass”. As bellydancers we must constantly fight the stigma that comes along with our art. People sometimes think that stripping and bellydance are one in the same. This is absolutely not true; however, statements such as these not only cheapen the performers themselves but as a group it sets back our efforts to have bellydance seen as a legitimate art form.

On our way out, Jackie talked to the owner who then went inside “to handle it”. I don’t know what “handling it” entails but we didn’t hang around long enough to find out. Needless to say we won’t ever go back to Avalon but if you’re into rude, snobby patrons that can’t keep their hands to themselves, pricey cover charges and racist staff this is the place for you! Please keep in mind that I do not believe this is the standard practice of Avalon and I’d like to think the extremely diverse crowd the club drew that night represents this.

I am partially of Greek descent and was raised around bellydance. This is as much a part of my culture as the food, the language and Grecian art and history. I was even taught Greek mythology by my YiaYia (grandmother) when I was a young child. Additionally, my great uncle owned a restaurant that had dancers performing most every evening. I can remember being fascinated by these powerful women and the beautiful costumes. I’ve studied dance since high school and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I began to learn bellydance. I am often arbitrarily labeled as “white” even though I consider myself Mediterranean and above all Human! It is these conclusions of closed minds that frustrate me more than anything.

Moral of the story: Bellydance is for EVERYONE!!!

Hello, my name is Kira and I'm part Greek on my mother's side. I grew up more Greek than anything else though in that I listened to Greek music, ate Greek food, went to the Greek fest etc. And, I sport a little sticker of the Greek flag on my car. I tried to take classes so that I could learn to speak Greek but I only got as far as "I am a girl and I have a goat" (which I can't remember anyways).
Anyhoo, my family is from the island of Ikaria and we have a small plot of land there and I loved visiting Greece more than any other place I have been. It felt like home... I don't know, there was just something about the people, the food and the language. I can't wait to go again.
